FireTrap is a fire safety game for primary school children developed in for the New Zealand Fire Service.
It uses experiential learning and behavioural economics approaches to incentivise the game players – so that they learn the best safety practices themselves. This results in greater retention and ownership of the lessons.
In this case, everything in the game encouraged players to ‘Get out and stay out’ during a fire despite temptations. Other lessons about getting low during smoke and knowing escape routes in advance are encouraged. Photos of real-life burnt out houses were used to show how the learning transfers to the real-world. The game was evaluated with pre and post testing of players’ fire safety knowledge by graduate students from the University of Auckland’s Psychology Department.
